When you first start the game you’ll get the opening movie that explains the backstory. Your ancestor as opened a portal to another world. Which let a lot of Eldritch monsters come through and wiped out his whole crew. In addition to that he was experimenting with necromancy and creating aberrations. So you’ll get a see a variety of monsters types including Undead, Mutated Pigs and Eldritch Beings from another world. And there are the Cultist which are humans that sided with the Eldritch. Your starting heroes are a Crusader and a Highwayman or more commonly referred to as Reynauld and Dismas. Don’t become attached to these two. Once a hero dies he stays dead. It’s likely you’ll lose one or both as you progress through the game. They start off on the old road that leads the Hamlet. You’ll have to kill some bandits on the way into town. This is typically easy enough to do. Just use the Highwayman’s melee attack, which also causes bleed (or damage over time) and the Crusader’s stun attack. You should get through with minimal stress and damage. The chest is typically trapped so I wouldn’t bother with opening it.
